Graffiti Wednesday #2 Underwater Creatures

San Francisco is a small city, 7 miles by 7 miles, even so, it is a city of villages with lots of streets and alleys and always new discoveries to be had.  Like my recent discovery of a whole wall of devilish looking sea creatures one block over from where I have been getting my haircut every four weeks for the last four years.

My husband and I share one car, but he is the main drive and I don’t usually have it.  I take the shuttle offered by my employer to the BART station and walk the ten minute walk to my hair salon.  But two weeks ago my husband was out of town and I had the car.  So I drove to the salon and parked in a lot not to far away.

When I got the car in my spot and looked up I saw a giant wall across another small road the opposite direction of the salon with a wall covered in the following graffiti.

There was a lobster with a skull body:

A giant squid:

And a massive purple octopus all with a large shark running the length of the wall with the words “Sink or swim” in the center:

Clearly this piece had taken a long time.  There was so much detail to admire but I was going to be late for my appointment so I had to move on.  I plan to go a little early next time and check out more of it!

Graffiti Wednesday [on Saturday] #1: John Lennon

My friend Jennifer has been writing a lot of great posts recently on graffiti in and around Oklahoma City.  I have always noticed it, but with the exception of one particular piece of graffiti that I have photographed near my house, I have done much in the way of capturing it.

But Jennifer has me looking at it with a new eye and I have started stopping and taking pictures of interesting pieces whenever I see them (if I can).

This past week she created a meme for other graffiti posts and I am participating!

Before I start with new finds, I wanted to share a photo of the one piece of graffiti near my house that I watch like a hawk.  I have been living in my neighborhood in Berkeley for nearly five years now and this image of John Lennon and it is constantly surrounded by new and old tags and drawings, but no one ever really seems to bother John.

Also the company that owns this “wall” is a Sake factory and when people paint or tag on their other walls, they immediately clean it with a fresh new coat of paint, but this wall the “let” people use as a canvas.  It is like they are giving a gift, saying you can use this wall, but please respect our other ones.

There is something about that I really like…and I think Mr. Lennon would like that as well!
